EVIL OF THE DALEKS Bookplate for SALE

 I was recently commissioned  to create a b/w bookplate for the Frazer Hines EVIL OF THE DALEKS , to be signed by the actor.

My brief was to create a moody b/w piece representative of the story prominently featuring Jaime to be signed by Fraser. I supplied three small pencils roughs ( see below) from which rough A was chosen to proceed to pencils. The Commissioner requested the Dalek move over to frame left and we had our composition.

Next I sent over two pencil drawings of Jaime from which one was chosen for the finished composition. I light boxed my drawings onto a clean sheet of Stanmore Bristol board and did a finished pencil drawing that was approved by Fraser and the drawing was inked.

IT'S ONLY A GAME

My first published Dr Who art was for a story written by Andy Lane. I was commissioned by Gary Russell for the 1995 Yearbook. Gary didn't feel my style appropriate for the comic strip at the time but wanted to use me somewhere and the story 'It's only a Game' was gratefully received by me.I drew the b/w artwork on hot press watercolour paper before adding very simple colour washes of liquid watercolour.It was the precursor of the technique I was to use extensively on The Cybermen which I was offered not long after I delivered this art.

My latest Dr Who illustration was the cover for the Shada Animation Steel Book. It's still only a game.

SHADA ANIMATION

Since the BBC has released the news that the missing parts of Shada have been newly animated I want to briefly explain my involvement for curious minds. I was hired late last year as head colourist on the production which meant I oversaw all colour aspects of the show specifically the characters and lighting options. In April I was additionally hired as lead storyboard artist and worked for 6 weeks with producer Charles Norton on all the big sequences before starting colour work. The rest of the boards were done by various hands including lead character designer Martin Geraghty. Finally I created the cover for the steelbook which you'll perhaps of seen in the announcement but if not it's below. There's also another back cover for the card sleeve that features the Doctor and Romana in a punt. I'm not going to answer any in-depth questions yet but hope that quells any initial questions. BERNIE WRIGHTSON RIP

It isn't hyperbole when I say that without seeing Bernie Wrightson's art at age 14 I wouldn't be doing what I do. I absolutely wanted to be Berni ( which is how he spelt his name back then so as not to be confused with Bernie Wrightson the American swimmer). I yearned to draw exactly like him before I'd heard of Graham Ingels who was perhaps his biggest influence with Frazetta.My very first comic strips were rawly drawn tales of terror in my approximation of his style and I loved trying to be him.They say you shouldn't meet your heroes and I never did . My heart and condolences go out to his family - God knows what they must be feeling today.

I feel like I should post something visual on this sad day of Bernie Wrightson's death but I don't want it seen as taking advantage of the event. So I present my only ever drawing of Swamp Thing - the monster forever associated with Bernie in celebration of his influence on so many artists who without his guidance wouldn't be who they are.We'll always love you Bernie.

JUDGE DREDD MEGAZINE - DOG FIGHT

All my textured paintings lead back to my 2005 graphic novel called THE FACELESS : A Terry Sharp Story. I re-invented myself into a moody colour artist that the book required. The offshoot was various commissions in the same popular style. Here's one that ran in the Judge Dredd Megazine. Written by Dr Who comics writer Cavan Scott it tells the story of illegal werewolf fights! I've included the initial pencil drawing that acted as the framework for the colour lychanthro-technics!

JEFFREY JONES SKETCHBOOK

The Jeffery Jones Sketchbook arrived this morning. For some reason I was expecting a bigger book but this is about A4 and exactly the size it should be. It's chock full of sketches in pencil and ink printed on a delicate paper stock but what delighted me also was the continuing monologue between Jones and George Pratt throughout the book talking about their journey in art and painting. Frankly I'd of been happy with a book full of pretty pictures but this is so much better! I want to read this in sequence but can't help reading snippets and it's GOLD I tell you!

BOYS' WORLD ANNUAL 1964

Today I received a copy of the BOYS' WORLD 1964 Annual which to my surprise and utter delight included illustrations by the great Charles Keeping for a story called BEEN FISHING. Keeping is best known for his book illustrations so to find an illustrator of this pedigree in a boys yearly annual was unexpected. For your enjoyment I've scanned them and the cover should you wish to get one yourself. Also for comic art fans there is a comic strip by Brian Lewis and other illustrated features. Christmas 1964 must of been a visual feast for BOYS' WORLD fans!

ME MAGAZINE 1989

Fiction illustration for Me Magazine 1989. This is one of many lifestyle magazine illustrations I painted for the likes of Tv Quick , Bella , Woman's Own and Take A Break to name a few. I was still trying to master illustrating fiction to a tight deadline - usually about a week. Bear in mind I had a day job in an illustration agency as a rep so all my art was done late into the night with usually little reference ( which probably shows). That said publishers liked something I was doing as I was commissioned many times in the late 1980s. It's sad to see this area of work for the illustrator hardly exists anymore.I'm glad I was there at the tail end.

THE CRUSADERS TIMETEAM ARTWORK

Earlier today I posted on Twitter the pencils for one of my earliest Timeteam illustrations for The Crusaders. One of the replies was from original Timeteam member Richard Bignell. Richard bought the artwork from me over 12 years ago and sent me a scan of it which I share here. It's lovely to be re-aquainted with an old friend like this and the art has retained much of it's original vibrancy ( obviously it's been kept away from sunlight which will fade the colour). Also below are the pencils I tweeted. Enjoy!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BERNIE WRIGHTSON

In honour of Bernie Wrightson's 68th birthday today I'm posting my Inktober drawing of Swamp Thing. Bernie is recovering from a second operation for a brain tumour so I wanted to dedicate this drawing to him and wish him a successful recovery and happy birthday! Without Bernie's artwork I wouldn't be the artist I am today - he's been very important to me since I was a teenager - an inspiration that continues to this day. Bernie I salute you - you're the best!

STEVE DILLON 1962-2016

The only compensation I can think of in this sad situation is that he started so well so young that even at his untimely death of 54 he'd produced an incredible body of work already for generations to read and admire. For me particularly his first 10 years were his best before he swapped his brush for a pen and started paring things down - no doubt in response to increasing deadline pressure. He was a heavy drinker and smoker which is never a good combination for such a sendentary career as drawing comics. His work never struck me as artistically pretentious or particularly interested in art with a capital A.He drew in an uncomplicated natural way - telling stories clearly but with plenty of gusto and drama that appealed directly to the common man which I think was ultimately his secret of success. Everybody loved Steve Dillon and that's a rare thing for an artist.I'm glad that I saw his work when I did as it directed my path probably more than I've acknowledged before. Death brings thoughts to the fore quite acutely.

LSOH #37 - THE CARPATHIAN EAGLE

I was invited to contribute a back cover for the latest issue of that august Hammer film journal LITTLE SHOPPE OF HORRORS #37 out at Halloween 2016. Roy Skeggs who produced the Hammer television series Hammer House of Horror is one of the interviewees in the issue so I chose to paint an image based on my favourite episode The Carpathian Eagle which starred the lovely Suzanne Danielle. She plays a serial killer writer who takes on the persona of various murderers and in this case a legendary Carpathian Countess. She then lures men to their doom tearing out their hearts!
