ISLAND OF THE SIRENS

Island Of The Sirens was written by Keith Temple and was published in the Dr Who Storybook 2009. The Doctor  and Donna are found floating in the Aegean in the Tardis by Jason and his Argonauts. This was probably my favourite of the three stories I illustrated for the Storybook range , mainly because I'm such a fan of mythic stories and films. It gave me yet another opportunity to work in a more textured style attempting to evoke old style storybooks in feel. I'm pleasantly surprised that I still like most of this artwork after not looking at this since I did the job. Such a shame the Storybooks stopped as these were dream jobs.

  1. How on earth do you use such strong colours, but still keep the atmosphere? And that Cyclops is BRILLIANT.

  2. The colour work here is really nice. The tones are spot on.
they're all amazing but I think the harpy is my favourite - I just love the bold lines of her hair/mane.

  3. I fekkin love these, Ade. I purchased the book just for this story. It does capture that look of kids books from the 60's and early 70's, makes me think of an illustrated bible i had one Xmas. It's the clever mix of soft grades and primary's - bloody lovely!

Are the originals in gray wash then some fancy fiddling in photo shop?

  5. The originals are greywash though the purposeful pen bleeds add a pleasing warn tone. Curves in Ps are respinsible for the colour.
