My favourite cover for John Wyndham's THE MIDWICH CUCKOOS buy Paul Hogarth ( 1960). A simple design that holds so much frenetic energy in it's lines. You can see more brilliant Penguin Science Fiction cover design at http://www.penguinsciencefiction.org/04.html#1440a
In more recent years, Penguin first issued their series of John Wyndam books with covers by Spencer Wilson, which I really *didn't* like (http://roberthanks.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5500b4fae88330133ec5ab71a970b-pi) and then later by Brian Cronin, which I wasn't that crazy about either (http://images.pricerunner.com/product/image/76251754/The-Midwich-Cuckoos.jpg). I prefer your Paul Hogarth one to either.

ReplyDeleteHi Richard
ReplyDeleteSpencer's covers seemed pretty ingenious to me though I can see why they weren't that popular from what I've heard. Thanks for the comment.

For me, Spencer Wilson's covers are just too cartoon-y to convey disquietude. Still, I have to hand it to Penguin, it was a pretty left-field choice of illustrator for Wyndham.
ReplyDeleteI think that's what attracted me and was probably their reasoning? I'd really like a crack myself even if only for me.:)
