Below are a few examples of covers I've coloured for Panini/Marvel titles. I've always enjoyed colouring other artists' work - you learn alot about their approach. Some artists leave plenty for the colourist to do whilst others shade and tone their drawings with black ink. With the advent of digital colouring , comic art styles have evolved to take best advantage of the new possibilities. All the art you see below was drawn in the 1970s and 80s except the last cover and hence the drawing had to be stronger to contain the simpler colour techniques back then. I think these brush up quite well overall.

POP ART JUBILEE
In the latest issue of DWM ( # 448) the Timeteam watch The Idiot's Lantern which is set at the time of the Queen's Coronation in 1952. It occured to me that this was an ideal opportunity to use a Pop Art retro style. I did a bit of this way back in the series The Cybermen so it was nice to revisit. After drawing and inking the art as usual I added some dot screens digitally ( like the old Letratone) and used very flat colours hopefully evoking memories of Roy Lichtenstein's controversial comic panels. Below are various stages of the artwork.

Crimson Altar
I came across this image today that I did ages ago for Little Shoppe of Horrors magazine. It was done totally in Manga Studio - pencils and inks. An early experiment using the application. Looking at it now I quite like it and thought it good enough for the blog. I ying and yang over Manga Studio and tend to use it for effects work more these days , inking an image originally with a pen. Does it make a difference? to me it does - I see myself falling into routines of inking with MS - chance becomes less of a factor and chance can make a drawing sometimes. It does have some great features though like perspective rulers , tones and sfx never mind lettering! But like anything it's a tool and not the answer to everything especially when it comes to getting your heart down on the page ...

Sci Fi Art Now
This was done for a book called Sci Fi Art Now. I did a rough layout and then drew and coloured it in Photoshop in a freeform way. Came out alright I think. Titled pretentiously Angels Descending or some such cobblers...

WONDER WOMAN in BW
I've never drawn Wonder Woman before and am old enough to remember Linda Carter fitting into her tv costume just , which I suppose had to influence my take. I probably spent more time researching WWs costume ( no really) than drawing this pic! The things I do for money ...
