I drew the two parter Forever Dreaming and after a dreadful week this comes as a sorely needed tonic!
“Forever Dreaming” arguably has the best art in the book, or at the very least the most fitting. Adrian Salmon’s blocky, surrealist style is a perfect fit for both the quiet British lunacy of a seaside town and a deeply weird story that opens with Amy briefly trapped as a child in the past, features the Doctor turning to sand and at times wouldn’t feel out of place as an Avengers episode. Again, there are some nice characters beats here but the real star is the sheer visual invention of Salmon’s work.
I remember talking to you about this, and being surprised that this was all digital. So was Gareth. It looks very natural media, a real character to the line. Good review very well deserved!

To be honest I've pretty much withdrawn from digital drawing ( I don't think it gets across the *feeling* I'm looking for in my work). I've noted a few artists I know turning away from the digital format for various reasons but mostly I think because drawing on paper is more enjoyable for them.I think all the visual bells and whistles that digital programmes allow take away something intangible about making art. I fully realise it's still a tool at the end of the day but I can't help thinking it props up many artists.

ReplyDeleteI am biased, as I love seeing the original artwork, you can see the artist in the paint (is that too pretentious?) and you just don't get that so much with digital.

ReplyDeleteSome great stuff in The Child of Time but your artwork in Forever Dreaming really stood out from the crowd in exactly the same way as Universal Monsters did in The Widow's Curse graphic novel. The artwork in Forever Dreaming was trippy, colourful, menacing, playful and groov - I read it twice over just to enjoy the imagery again. Great stuff.
