Following on from the last post I wanted to show more of the style I'm pursuing right now. I think the first illustration particularly captures the look even though the perspective of the stairs is questionable. Then again there is something about artwork that isn't *perfect* that appeals to me. I was pleased with the hot orange colour scheme particularly - it's the type of thing you might of found in a copy of Look-In in the 1970s. The pencils included are for comparison. Whilst I strive to get all the shapes right ( let's forget those stairs :) this style of working does demand you ink in the final details live adding an edginess to the drawing. I also tried to colour in a blocky untidy way - I particularly like the shading on the girl's face on the right in this respect. Somebody told me that the monster reminded them of the Terror of the Autons Target book cover which I take as a compliment - job done!

50 NOT OUT!

Whilst this year is momentous in terms of Doctor Who it is also a watershed moment for me as I turn 50 in September. It's a time to look back and wonder at roads untravelled and take a good hard look at what you want to acheive in the time you have left. I made a conscious move last year starting with Army of Ghosts on my monthly Timeteam showcase to go back to the basics of drawing utilising more reference , hitting better likenesses yet still producing images I hope excite the viewer. It's not enough to be a stylist these days to stand out from the crowd. I've had some good feedback from fans which is encouraging as well as doing some work recently for the BBC connected with Doctor Whos 50th year that I can't unveil yet. My next challenge will be utilizing this docudrama style ( as I quaintly named it) on a comic strip - just waiting for the opportunity...

THE THREE DOCTORS

It seems appropriate in this 50th Anniversary year for Doctor Who to blog a previous anniversary picture from The Three Doctors. I can't recall much about drawing this except that the editor at the time felt it was rather complicated for my style. The original art was sent over to the U.S. where it was auctioned at one of the Gallifrey conventions. I have no idea how much it made. I attach a scan of the pencils for comparison.

THE CHILD OF TIME review

I drew the two parter Forever Dreaming and after a dreadful week this comes as a sorely needed tonic!

“Forever Dreaming” arguably has the best art in the book, or at the very least the most fitting. Adrian Salmon’s blocky, surrealist style is a perfect fit for both the quiet British lunacy of a seaside town and a deeply weird story that opens with Amy briefly trapped as a child in the past, features the Doctor turning to sand and at times wouldn’t feel out of place as an Avengers episode. Again, there are some nice characters beats here but the real star is the sheer visual invention of Salmon’s work.
